Voluntary Sector & Voluntary Branches

Voluntary Sector

Western Care Association is a Mayo organisation, formed in 1966 by a group of caring and far-sighted people who were prepared to give their knowledge and time on a voluntary basis to provide a better life for people with a learning disability.

By having a voluntary structure of branches throughout Mayo, it creates a climate of awareness and inclusion in local communities.

It also facilitates opportunities for service users in the area of integration, job opportunities and leisure activities.

The voluntary sector also lobbies and advocates for rights and resources for people with a learning disability.

It provides substantial revenue and resources through fundraising. It also generates a voluntary work force to complement staff and provide a better quality of life for our service users.

The Voluntary Sector has also helped the Association to achieve International Accreditation under the Personal Outcomes Quality Measurement System.

Door to Door

Did you know?

Since the foundation of Western Care, our Annual Door to Door Collection has been our biggest fundraiser!

  • During the month of May, 750 Voluntary Collectors go Door to Door raising much needed funds for our Association.
  • The success of this fundraiser is down to the invaluable voluntary collectors, who give so selflessly of their time and of course, the continuous generosity of the people of Mayo.
  • If you would like to become a collector in your local community, town or village and help raise much needed funds for your area, or would like to offer help in another way, then we would be delighted to hear from you!

Branches & Branch Activity:
There are many voluntary branches of Western Care Association spread throughout the county of Mayo. To view the complete list click here.
  • Voluntary branches organise different fundraising events and activities raising funds for their branch/area. Take a look at the calendar below to see some of the events that are organised.
  • The fundraising & development department work together with the branch members providing any support they might require, i.e. posters, tickets, promotion of events, etc.
For Example:  The Castlebar Voluntary Branch

Since 2000 the Castlebar Voluntary Branch of Western Care have organised and held a fun filled Candlelight Ball in the Castlebar area. To-date, they have raised in excess of €100,000.

This money has enabled Western Care to invest funding in so many different projects and services, i.e. drama workshops in Westport, a Bocce Court in Ballinrobe, upgrade of mini bus for St John's, MPV for Ballyhaunis service, sensory equipment for autism service, funding towards a multi sensory room for speech and language service, furniture and appliances for service users living independently, materials for artwork, training and holidays for service users.

The success of this fundraiser is due to the enormous amount of hard work and time that the voluntary members give, so generously, to this event and also to the many businesses who continue to provide sponsorship each year, and to each and every guest that attends or buys a ticket!

We thank you sincerely and look forward to welcoming you each year!
